Felt-making is an age-old tradition in Nepal, and our partner Himalayan Crafts is renowned for the quality and comfort of its slippers.

All our slippers are made from natural felt, 100% sheep’s wool. Our designs are available with either a non-slip polyurethane sole (suitable for outdoor use) or a natural leather sole.

About wool felt

Wool is a natural animal fibre obtained from sheep, goats, yaks or camels. These animals have a thick fleece that traps air to protect them from the cold, as air is a poor conductor of heat.

Origin and production

Wool comes from the soft undercoat of sheep (not the coarse outer hair). To transform it into felt or yarn, it goes through several steps:

• Shearing: Removing the fleece in spring using machines or hand tools.
• Washing: Cleaning to remove grease, dust and impurities.
• Sorting: Separating fibres by quality and texture (fine fibres for clothing, coarser ones for rugs).
• Dyeing: Colouring fibres that are naturally white, black or brown.
• Carding: Straightening, rolling and combing to form yarns or felt sheets.
